Guidelines and Notes

NORD administers a number of different programs for investigational and approved pharmaceutical products manufactured by a number of pharmaceutical companies. NORD is a federation of voluntary health organizations committed to supporting and treating those with rare diseases. They determine how much of the monthly dosage the patient can afford; awards range from 25% to 100% of the monthly dosage.

Initiating Enrollment Call one of the above numbers and specify the drug needed. Each drug has its own application form.
Health Provider's Role The doctor completes and signs the application, attaches a prescription, and verifies the patients diagnosis.
Patient's Role The patient provides financial and insurance information. For some of the drugs proof of patient/household income is required. The patient's signature is required.
How Dispensed Each drug is different. Some are shipped to the physician's office, while others require the patient to pay a handling fee and use a mail order pharmacy.
Amount Dispensed Varies. They usually pay 25-100% of the cost for up to a year.
